Book Review: Fighting for a Hand to Hold: Confronting Medical Colonialism against Indigenous Children in Canada by Dr. Samir Shaheen-Hussain

Samir, the author, is a front-line pediatrician in the Emergency Room of Montreal Children’s Hospital and an activist in the struggle for equity for native children and their families in their access to the same health care as everyone else in Canada. By placing indigenous people’s relations with the medical system in the context of an overall colonial policy and practices, he confronts those who deny the existence of systemic racism and challenges them to change the situation.
